Creating the next generation network professional

Editorial Type: Comment     Date: 09-2015    Views: 1556

If, as it is suggested, IT technology is in some way to blame for a botched high profile football transfer, it once again illustrates the dependency organisations have placed upon the IT network

In many cases this dependency was not planned or designed and a lot of preparatory steps will have been ignored.

It is the combination of training and experience that creates the highly effective IT networking teams that are often consigned to backroom operations. While experience can be gained, training needs to be planned, provisioned and resourced. Critically, it doesn't happen by chance, and individuals must take responsibility for acquiring the core training that they need to advance their career and to do an above average job for their current and future employer. If they are not obsessed and uncompromising about getting this training, then it won't happen.

I know from experience that most technically minded people will self-teach or self-provision most of the technical training that they need, and I think this is fine - especially if it can be augmented with some academic or industry standard recognition.

Even for a network or system engineer, technical training alone will not be enough. If IT networking is to be fully integrated into the daily operational life of an organisation, then technical staff must be encouraged to acquire new skills that provide them with the insight needed to function alongside management, marketing, sales, manufacturing and finance professionals who have been formally trained in these ways.

Ladies and gentlemen of the network, it's time to upgrade your day job and for you to establish yourself at the top table of the future…
