IT security preparedness is now on the up and up

A new survey from SolarWinds has highlighted significant improvements in IT security preparedness and effectiveness among UK organisations, including steps the most successful IT departments have taken to improve their security posture

But it also demonstrates that the threat and consequences of security breaches remain. Key findings include:

• Nearly half (43%) of IT professionals surveyed said their organisations did not experience any security breaches in 2015, compared to just 30% that did
• 39% said their organisations were less vulnerable now than a year ago, while 27% said they were more vulnerable
• More than twice as many said their time to detect a threat decreased in 2015, versus those who said it increased (42% against 18%).

"The most surprising finding of the survey is just how many UK organisations are less vulnerable today than they were a year ago," said Mav Turner, director, business strategy, SolarWinds, "and, on a related note, how many have implemented security technologies and better security training.

"While this is a sign the industry is trending in the right direction, it's important for IT professionals to never get too confident in their organisations' security posture, which could potentially result in overestimating one's defences," he added.
