Welcome to the first Document Manager of 2014, to readers old and new - I say this because we are very aware that the magazine and its online equivalents are gaining new readers at probably the fastest rate since the title's inception over 20 years ago

With new readers come new markets and new industries that historically perhaps wouldn't have been seen as obvious target sectors for DM/ECM type technologies.

A quick look at this issue illustrates my point: in our news pages we talk about CCube Solutions' continuing success in the 'paper-free NHS' field, as well as international census projects for DRS in Myanmar, a food product company implementing INVU, and new accountancy business won by Lindenhouse. Elsewhere in the magazine you'll find case studies from a bewilderingly diverse range of industries and application areas: a police force in the West Indies, a digital mailroom implementation at the Leeds Building Society, and another at a Liverpool solicitors.

Meanwhile, some of our opinion pieces cover the strategic approach to Accounts Payable automation and the need for DM technologies in contract management. As EASY Software's Howard Frear says on page 16: "There is a growing recognition that the way in which contracts are managed throughout their lifecycle can impact quite significantly on revenue and cash flow for all concerned. And this is where specialist software comes in, because it can help automate certain processes while keeping everyone informed of updates and deadlines."

This focus on the financial implications of using (or NOT using) DM/ECM technologies is key, and it is a message we are seeing from all sorts of different vendors and partners across the sector. All this is proof of the rude health of the DM industry, of course, but also indicative that technologies such as those featured in our pages are finding wider acceptance than ever right across the business world.

For this reason we at Document Manager magazine are determined to keep our focus on what matters most to our readers: the measurable real world benefits of these and related technologies. It is our job to keep showing examples, explaining the background and the business reasoning as well as the technologies - educating and even evangelising at times about this most radical, most game-changing industry. And we hope that readers old and new will stick around for the journey!
