Building to a Grand Finale!

The Construction Computing Awards 2013 saw the year out in style as the Industry began to climb out of the doldrums

The Hammers Awards 2013, held on the 21st of November at the Hotel Russell in London, saw positive signs of the UK Construction Industry climbing back out of the dark days of the recent recession.

It was not only the increased numbers that turned up for the occasion - over 200 supporting guests gathered to see the outcome of the reader's online voting and judging panel's deliberations - but also the positive messages that were coming through from the guests. This was the 8th Hammers Awards ceremony, and they are now firmly established as an event that honours the achievements of companies in all categories of the industry.

We always give the winners an opportunity to write some words about their company, products and projects in the magazine after the event, and this year we've decided to split the round-up into two separate sections, with the second part featuring in the next issue.

Much of the talk at the Hammers VIII (yes, we do get to discuss current issues besides meeting with old friends, making new acquaintances, and enjoying the great food and wine that the Hotel traditionally serve!) related to the growing urgency in the need to comply with the Government's BIM agenda. Some of the newer award categories reflected this, and we have made a commitment to focus more heavily on BIM and related issues in the run up to 2016 - the crux date in the government's BIM timetable.

We also bid farewell - in professional terms that is - to a valuable friend and contributor to the magazine, Bob Garrett of Excitech, who retired last month. Bob told me of his plans to sail the Scottish Isles in his yacht this summer. Lucky fellow!
