Inside 2014

Ask those in the know what will be the hot topics for security in 2014 and there is no shortage of response.

For this is an industry that never shuts its eyes- lose your focus even momentarily and you could be in real trouble!

So, what are the experts saying? Where do they see the biggest threats coming from? From global analyst Gartner's perspective, along with integration of context-aware and security intelligence capabilities, the need for better security awareness will drive demand for security intelligence services delivered in a variety of ways, such as through managed security, consulting or data feed services.

Sentronex believes a dominant trend for 2014 will be the continued growth of personal and private cloud-based environments, with the safety and location of data, especially company-sensitive data, remaining the number one priority.

AppRiver predicts that many criminals will continue to invest time and effort infecting devices and holding data to ransom, while, in the wake of the Snowden scandal, people are determined to keep their private life under wraps, despite the attentions of intelligence agencies around the world, says Kaspersky Lab. That means protecting the information stored on their computers and devices, it states, and ensuring their online behaviour remains confidential. For more on the year ahead, see our feature on page 18.

Elsewhere, we kick off 2014 with in-depth look at compliance (page 10), information risk management (page 14) and mobility & cloud (page 32). Plus our follow-up on BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) can be found on page 30.

It only remains for me to wish you a safe and prosperous year to come. Computing Security is looking forward to sharing some of that with you.
