Massive strides forward

If there is one thing that the 2013 Computing Security Awards demonstrated above all else, it's the fact that the industry is moving in the right direction

Businesses are under constant threat, from all quarters, and rely heavily on those charged with coming up with the right solutions to counteract that. Never have the hackers, attackers and cybercriminals been more active - or more sophisticated in their chosen weapons. Keeping pace demands huge resources from the computing security community and the awards clearly showed the enormous strides forward that have been taken in keeping businesses safe.

The awards themselves, at the Hotel Russell in London's Russell Square, celebrated that success, recognising the outstanding performers. For full details of who won what, go to page 15 for your 8-page pull-out section.

Meanwhile, BYOD - Bring Your Own Device - continues to tax minds everywhere. Some wish it had never raised its head, while other believe it is the way to enhance employee productivity. For those who are still intent on resisting it and only endorsing employer devices within the workplace, they might want to reflect on the fact that the government is now taking the first steps towards allowing public sector workers to use BYOD.

Not always the most adventurous when it comes to such decision-making, the government has just outlined a series of guidelines for public sector workers who wish to implement BYOD. The series of documents advises public sector system administrators on the best way to manage access to private networks through the use of personal devices. The move will be seen by those who are vociferous backers of BYOD, embracing the growing trend enabling workers to use their own gadgets in the workplace, as a huge endorsement.

The communications and cloud computing specialist Qubic Group, for its part, believes this move by the government further reinforces the surging popularity of BYOD, but also shows the level of trust that many companies now have in the technology. Coupled with a recent report from Gartner, estimating that 85% of companies will eventually implement BYOD at the workplace, the trend is now firmly positioned in the mindset of employers. What matters now is that the right procedures are put in place, so that BYOD can thrive.
