LACNIC is down to its last four million IPv4 addresses

LACNIC has become the first of the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) to reach its last /10 (four million) IPv4 addresses. From this point on, LACNIC will allocate IPv4 addresses based on its exhaustion policy.

Axel Pawlik, Managing Director of the RIPE NCC said, “This is just the latest in a long line of warning signs that IPv4 is nearing exhaustion on a global scale. It is more important than ever that network operators accelerate full deployment of IPv6, which is the only solution that provides enough addresses for the rapid expansion of connectivity, to new devices and around the world.”

“Change is never easy, but perhaps IPv4 depletion is an event to celebrate rather than one to mourn. Many big players have already shown their commitment to deploying IPv6, and countless other organisations and networks around the world are also taking these necessary steps."

APNIC and the RIPE NCC announced they had reached their last /8 of IPv4 addresses in 2012, with LACNIC and ARIN following this year - which leaves AFRINIC as the only RIR with a significant pool of remaining addresses.

Since September 2012, organisations applying to the RIPE NCC for IPv4 address space are subject to IPv4 last /8 evaluation procedures. These processes are clearly laid out in the official policy developed by the RIPE community: each LIR can receive one /22 (1,024 IPv4 addresses) upon application for IPv4 resources. In order to obtain this /22 allocation, the LIR must already have an IPv6 allocation and have a demonstrated need for IPv4 address space.
