Watch out, it's started...

Moving around and doing my work as Editor of Network Computing I am picking up a firm sense of change that is more than the usual springtime stirring. None of its scientific, but to me it does seem very real

There is a cautious confidence, especially in the UK, about the economic recovery. This may be the first one in history that will directly drive investment in ICT, if for no other reason than the undisputed advantage it offers and its critical role in building business fortunes.

Some of the accepted norms are being challenged, and thank goodness that Brian Dye of Symantec has said that "Antivirus is dead" and "We don't think of antivirus as a money maker in any way." No-one can now at this stage stop using it with any confidence - but it should cause all organisations to think it through in their own specific context. What then is our next step?

The march of the acronyms is also invigorated. For example SDN, SDS (in fact SD everything) and IoT (in fact everything) alone will, and indeed are, changing the face of IT. The progress of IT will not be limited by technology or a shortage of deployment opportunities, but it may however be severely restricted by the technology luddites that sit protected in their kingdoms with their drawbridge firmly raised.

The technology luddites will no doubt be challenged from all quarters by the BYO IT experts, the line-of-business technology converts and the JDI brigade.

In my view, we are entering a new era where all bets are off, received wisdom erased and the horizon bright, shiny and far off. It's time for IT and Networking professionals to become unbound from what is and get engaged with what will be. In this way they can lead their organisation faithfully and confidently into the emerging new world. Are you up for the challenge?
