So to our last issue of 2014, and as usual it coincides with the hangover from the DM Awards, which turned out to be our best-attended ever and raised plenty of money for the Lords Taverners charity

Many thanks again to all who came along, and of course to everyone who voted. We have a full breakdown of all the winners and runners-up in this issue of course, starting on page 16. One of our big winners is also featured in an interview, as we spoke to David Wilkinson of BPO/Outsourcing/Bureau Business of the Year, Storetec. When the business started over ten years ago selling scanning hardware and software, says David, "it soon became apparent that very few of those clients actually wanted to be doing their own scanning". The rest, as they say, is history.

Personally I found it very gratifying to see so many firms represented at the DM Awards who hadn't attended before - I think this reflects on the changing nature of the industry itself and the fact that for every acquisition or merger, there is another new start-up waiting in the wings to impress us with their innovative ideas. Long may that continue!

Elsewhere in this issue we have an in-depth analysis of AIIM's latest 'Paper Wars' research programme. Doug Miles offers some enlightening insights into the results and suggests that there is an increasing recognition across business generally that what he calls 'business at the speed of paper' is simply no longer an option. As he says, organisations need to "question how your business is going to remain competitive in a mobile, always on, dispersed-workforce world if it clings to its paper-laden processes".

For the technically-minded reader, we take a close look at TWAIN in a piece from Visioneer's Jon Harju. TWAIN has been around since the very earliest days of photo/image processing on computers, of course, but these days it is an often under-estimated piece of technology in the arsenal of imaging/scanning businesses. Harju talks about the importance of advanced driver technology for the consumer and system integrator alike, adding: "Visioneer DriverPLUS provides users with advanced features, reliability and a friendly, new user interface. System integrators now have a powerful, completely programmatic driver that offers global administrative settings that can adjust how the driver interacts with users and a wide-range of scanning applications."

You will also, of course, find the usual broad mix of case studies, product reviews, opinions and other editorial material that has made DM an indispensable read now for 22 years. We look forward to seeing you for number twenty-three!
