Kodak Alaris Info Input

Kodak Alaris describe their recently launched Info Input offering with three straplines: 'connect applications; input seamlessly, and leverage web technology'.

What this means in practice is that the product extends capture capabilities to any desktop - with a browser - throughout the business.

This can alleviate the 'high touch' support and maintenance issues usually associated with enterprise deployments of ECM, DM and capture solutions, simply by virtue of removing the need for software to be installed at each user's workstation, whether within the enterprise, at a branch location or even remote working.

Whatever the environment, Kodak Info Input can be installed as a web service and act as the standard capture client for any ECM, DM or capture system. At the same time it integrates smoothly with all the existing system resources that those applications might be calling upon (databases, servers etc.). The user interface is very straightforward and intuitive: only those controls available to any given user are displayed to that user. This might be as simple as 'Scan', 'Index' and 'Exit'. On selecting 'Scan' the user is presented with options relating to the applications they can access. During the scan process the system displays a live 'Preview' window of the images as they are generated, with a simple Zoom slider controlling thumbnail size.

To view the details of any given image, simply hover over the magnifying glass icon on each page. Documents can be easily merged, or moved within a batch, by highlighting them. Clicking on any given thumbnail will open the image and allow the user to perform more detailed checking as required. The Annotations toolbox offers useful tools such as pen, textbox and rubber stamp to highlight a document's current status or perform other collaborative tasks.

Indexing scanned documents is again as simple as clicking on the Index button. Info Input can, for instance, use barcode values to perform database lookups against scans. Data fields that need verification are displayed in a panel next to the image, and also highlighted in the document itself for comparison.

Once verified, the user simply hits 'Next' to move on to the next document in the batch. The process is so intuitive and simple in order to reduce the likelihood of errors in the information being passed into business processes.

Documents can also be imported direct into Info Input as image files (e.g. MS Office documents, PDF, JPG or TIF) rather than scanned, and are then managed in exactly the same way within the system. It can even handle photos and AVI video files (potential use cases might include insurance claim evidence for instance).

Info Input boasts what Kodak describe as a 'pluggable architecture' that allows it to connect directly into, and be presented within, any other web application. This saves the user having to come out of a LOB application such as Salesforce in order to complete a scan process. Indexing and QA is done in the context of the business application, which could have enormous value when managing disparate applications on the same platform in a business.

VERDICT
Compared to legacy approaches, Info Input has numerous benefits: it is scaleable, Java-based for optimal security, can plug into and be embedded into other applications and can update automatically via the browser. It also uses concurrent licensing, so there are no volume limits.
