A 'self-healing, self-managing, distributed software-based enterprise storage solution'

SUSE has begun the beta testing phase of SUSE Storage, a self-healing, self-managing, distributed software-based storage solution for enterprise customers. Using SUSE Storage and commodity off-the-shelf (COTS) disk arrays, customers can cost effectively meet growing demands for object, archival and bulk storage.

According to Stanley Zaffos, Gartner research vice president for servers and storage, Gartner predicts that open source storage will gain 20 percent market share by 2018, validating it as a legitimate market solution for organisations.

Based on the Firefly version of the Ceph open source project, the fully featured SUSE Storage aims to deliver lower total cost of ownership, making it well suited for object, archival and bulk storage. Features include cache tiering, thin provisioning, remote replication, copy-on-write cloning and erasure coding.

"The storage market today is poised for disruptive change, just like the server market was 15 years ago," said Larry Morris, SUSE Storage product manager. "SUSE Storage is an ideal solution for those enterprises struggling to manage their explosive data growth, meeting their needs reliably, securely and cost effectively."

SUSE Storage is scheduled for release in the first half of 2015. Organisations interested in joining the beta program should contact their SUSE sales representative.
