Talking heads

Unusually for Storage magazine, this last issue of the year features a whopping FIVE interviews in its pages

This is not an indication that we are planning to move into the celebrity gossip market, but more a matter of timing on the part of the many companies we'd like to speak to - and it certainly makes for a varied read. We speak to industry giants WD about their latest offerings to the SMB storage market, as well as companies such as Wipro and NetJapan who are well-established names in their home markets and expanding here in the UK.

We discuss the impact of cloud computing on the storage industry with Sol-Tec's Lee Cox, who predicts some major upheavals on the horizon: "There is still - sometimes - an initial reaction to the idea of the cloud that says 'Isn't this dangerous for my business? Where will my data be?' But once we have the conversation, and explain the kind of data centre you have, and the potential additional layers of security that quite possibly they don't currently have - and perhaps most importantly, how much money these cloud companies have spent - then most of them will start to relax."

Elsewhere Wipro's Ramadurai Ramalingam also sees cloud contributing to a shift in the market: "Object storage is maturing, moving beyond the cloud infrastructure and archive space. Software Defined Storage is quickly evolving, providing a compelling value proposition for enterprises. Cloud based storage has evolved as a cost effective option to store secondary and archive data."

As we come to the end of the year it feels like a good time to stop and consider some of the changes we have seen in the industry in 2014, and to wonder what might be coming next year. The enlightening and occasionally controversial views in this issue's many interviews will certainly give us food for thought. We look forward to sharing similar insights with you in 2015!
