Reports about major breaches have suggested that companies aren't fully leveraging the security technologies they purchase.

The 'Security on the Shelf' report sets out the findings of a survey that was commissioned by a third party research firm, asking 172 IT professionals who work in small-mid-sized businesses and enterprises about the resource challenges they face surrounding security. One alarming response, according to Trustwave, was that 35% of organisations said an important reason that their security-related software sat on the shelf was "because IT has no time or are too busy to implement the software solution properly". Some 33% said they simply didn't have the manpower.
