With product announcements ranging from the trivial to the bizarre, the Editor distils the essence of those that are of interest to the Networking community.

There is still some talk about IPv6 and it's hard to get a fix on the level of progress. Infoblox clearly still think of it as firmly on the to-do list though, and have been speaking about a new free tool that they are offering to help network administrators and network architects get started with planning the transition from IPv4 to IPv6.

The transition is needed because of the limitation of 4.3 billion IP addresses using IPv4 on a planet with 7.2 billion inhabitants. Infoblox say that with IPv6, "There are an almost infinite number of IPv6 addresses and the smallest allocation for individual businesses is 281 trillion times greater than the total number of IPv4 addresses. While this vast ocean of addresses solves the problem of availability, IPv6 addresses are difficult for humans to understand or compare, making manual management almost impossible."

Adding to the need for IP addresses, Samsung Techwin has introduced a new series of competitively priced Network Video Recorders (NVRs) equipped with a PoE+ switch. This launch is hot on the heels of the launch of the company's WiseNet Lite security camera series. Collectively, the cameras and NVRs are intended to provide system designers with a wide range of options to meet the budget limitations as well as the functionality requirements of any video surveillance project.

Logicalis SMC (Service Management Consulting) has been discussing the increasing demand for its ITSM solutions and professional service from international clients. Described as a geographic expansion, it is building on the skills and experience vested in Logicalis SMCs current base in the Netherlands, where 120 ITSM professionals already work with major clients in a wide range of countries and industries.

The company’s CEO, Eugene Wolf points out that, "After significant growth… we're seeing a real breakthrough outside the Netherlands with our IT-Guardian best-practice ITSM solution… We already have extensive experience in the UK market and working alongside key partners like ServiceNow and HP and we see huge potential here."

The cost of connecting to the Internet has at times been a barrier for small traders, businesses and private individuals. There is no doubt that the market is being corrected and Zen Internet, recently voted the best call centre in the industry, is doing its bit with the introduction of a range of new low cost Broadband bundles starting at £10.00. Richard Tang, founder of Zen Internet, explains: "We know that customers don't want to pay above the odds for their broadband, but they're willing to pay a little bit extra for the best service. We continually strive to provide the best reliability, speed, support and service in the industry. Our new lower prices will open up the quality of our approach to a wider audience. It's a very exciting time for Zen".

The recent increase in new services and the associated difficultly forecasting spikes in data traffic has resulted in legacy carrier networks struggling to meet dynamic service requirements. In order to meet these challenges, many carriers are evolving their networks towards SDN architecture.

Last year Huawei released the Flow Engine 1.0 to help carriers achieve global optimisation using an IP monolayer algorithm. Building on this, the recent release of Flow Engine 2.0 is integrated into SDN controllers to support tens of thousands of nodes and to help the carriers improve IP+Optical resource efficiency by 40 per cent when compared to conventional methods. The solution also uses parallel processing, multi-subnet cutting and a range of other technologies to support carriers with super large networks (over ten thousand nodes) with practicality challenges.

For manufacturers of storage and storage systems the challenge continues to change at an alarming rate. Seagate Technology has continued their own impetus announcing that its award-winning Backup Plus family of external storage offerings will now include 200GB of OneDrive cloud storage for 2 years, claiming that this represents unmatched value for the category.
