Cloud Security from iSheriff

Editorial Type: Review     Date: 07-2015    Views: 4551

The uptake of cloud-based security services across SMBs and enterprises is growing exponentially and it's easy to see why, as they are so much simpler to deploy and manage than on-premise solutions

Cloud Security from iSheriff is one of the best examples that we have seen so far, and it proved extremely easy to implement and manage.

Its modular design meant that we could pick and choose from web, mail and endpoint security components and control them using a single web portal. There's much more on offer though as iSheriff can enforce DLP (data leak prevention) to regulatory compliance levels and offers optional cloud-based secure email archiving and e-discovery services as well.

It's backed up by one of the biggest cloud security networks around as iSheriff maintains 35 global data centres for assured redundancy. Its backbone provides over 1,000 access points and if compliance requirements demand, you can even choose which region to store your policies and log data in.

Setting up the web security service is swift: the portal listed our lab's public IP address which we added as a new source. Once this had been verified by iSheriff, we proceeded to create some web filtering policies. The policies are very versatile and hundreds of web categories are sorted into groups for easier access. After defining our working hours, we could decide whether to block each category during this period only, or outside as well.

Malware protection is a given and the data protection tab allowed us to permit or block the transmission of a range of file types. Regulatory compliance checks such as PCI-DSS can be activated and HTTPS inspection is a standard feature.

Client browsers must be configured to use iSheriff as a web proxy and this is achieved using the link to the PAC file in the portal or by deploying the endpoint security agent. The latter automatically sets the PAC location during installation and brings a lot more features into play.

Along with blocking web apps such as remote access, P2P and messaging, policies can be used to enforce web security and real-time anti-virus scanning on endpoints. This means they're fully protected when outside of the corporate network, and password protecting the agent prevents it from being uninstalled.

To set up email security, iSheriff just requires details of public IP addresses for outbound mail along with internal mail domains and mail server MX records. Mail policies are equally versatile as we could block or quarantine inbound malware and choose from four spam detection thresholds.

Outbound mail gets the same tough treatment and we could set schedules for email digests to be sent to users, allowing them to view quarantined messages and take action to delete or release them. All policies can be applied to IP addresses or users and iSheriff provides a handy utility which imported all our Active Directory users and groups from our Windows domain controller. Adding them to a policy is simple as we just dragged and dropped them onto the relevant web or mail policy.

The web portal's dashboard displays a wealth of information about user activity and detected threats for web and email, plus options for emailing regular reports. iSheriff also has resellers as well as end users on its radar as the portal can be logo branded.

Cloud security services are the way forward for many businesses and they don't get much easier to deploy and manage than iSheriff's Cloud Security. It provides a wealth of web and mail security measures and augments them with full endpoint security with DLP - and then it delivers them all through a well-designed and informative web portal. NC
